Felony and Misdemeanor Disclosure
In the state of California after EMT course completion and passing of NREMT to become an EMT you must be certified by your local EMS agency in your county. All counties are now doing a background check prior to issuing certification. An unsatisfactory background check will result in no EMT certification being issued by your county. You will be asked to disclose felonies and misdemeanors. An unsatisfactory background check may result in no EMT certification being issued by your county. For certain felonies EMT certification will not be considered such as murder and certain sexual related crimes but for some felonies such as DUI certification EMT certification may be considered by the Medical Director. Each county has different guidelines for these background checks and National Institute for Healthcare Education does not guarantee student's that they will be issued an EMT certification upon course completion.
